The Ministry provides import pathways for thousands of freshwater fish species, yet none for saltwater aquarium fish. Coral imports are prohibited, and local reef collection is banned.

About the association
A hobby regulated
out of existence
Maldivian Reefers Association is a registered non-profit association under the Associations Act, Law No. 3/2022, based in Hulhumalé, Republic of Maldives.
- Our position is narrow and specific. Other animal hobbies in the Maldives have a legal pathway: birds and freshwater fish can be imported under existing rules. Saltwater fish and coral cannot be imported at all, and collecting from local reefs is also prohibited by the authorities.
- With both routes closed, there is no lawful way to keep a marine aquarium here. We are not campaigning for the removal of rules. We are campaigning for the existence of rules — permits, inspection, quotas, traceability — instead of a blanket ban.
