Position statement
Our Position
Protect the reef.
Regulate the risk.
Punish misuse.
But do not prohibit an entire responsible community when those risks can be addressed through proportionate regulation.
What we are asking for
We are not asking for every marine species to be permitted.
Not askingWe are not asking for unrestricted coral collection.
Not askingWe are not asking for imported fish or coral to be released into Maldivian reefs.
Not askingWe are not asking authorities to compromise environmental protection.
Not askingWe are asking for
a legal pathway.
A pathway where approved marine aquarium species can be imported under permits, where biosecurity risks are scientifically assessed, where high-risk species remain prohibited, where livestock is traceable, and where reef aquarium enthusiasts are finally able to practice their hobby legally and responsibly.

Equal opportunity. Responsible regulation. Reef protection.
A legal reef aquarium hobby and strong environmental protection do not have to be opposing objectives. With appropriate regulation, the Maldives can achieve both.
